Los Angeles, March 31 (Xinhua) — A team led by a U.S. researcher on Thursday published the first complete, seamless sequence of the human genome.Six papers related to the achievement were published in the American journal Science on the same day.The study was conducted by the Telomere to Telomere Consortium, an international team led by researchers from the National Human Genome Research Institute, the University of California, Santa Cruz, the University of Washington and other institutions. The human genome contains about 3 billion DNA base pairs, and complete, seamless sequencing of these base pairs is crucial to understanding the full spectrum of mutations in the human genome and the impact of genes on certain diseases, the National Human Genome Research Institute said in a statement.Analysis of the complete human genome sequence will significantly increase scientists’ understanding of human chromosomes, thus opening up new research directions, the communique said. This helps to answer basic biological questions about how chromosomes separate and divide. The team also found more than 2 million additional genetic variations using the complete sequence of the human genome, and these studies have provided more accurate information on genetic variations in 622 medically relevant genes.Eric Green, director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, said the completion of the sequencing of the complete human genome was a major scientific achievement, providing the first comprehensive view of human DNA.This basic information will enhance the understanding of all the nuances of the human genome and advance the genetic study of human diseases. The human genome sequencing project is seen as being as important as the Apollo moon missions.Deciphering the human genome, which contains human genetic information, could revolutionize the diagnosis of diseases, the development of new drugs and the search for new therapies. In 2001, the international “Human Genome Project”, in which scientists from six countries including China participated, published the draft and preliminary analysis of the human genome in the British journal Nature.Due to the limitations of sequencing technology at the time, there were many gaps in the draft human genome.(after)
